DNS Server

DNS Server is a "name-to-IP translator". Before an email can be sent to john@smith.net, the IP address of smith.net's SMTP server must be know. By default, eGo uses the DNS servers congiured by the operating system. If you want to use a different one, type the server's IP address in the edit box and then check "Use this server".

SMTP Server

Here you configure eGo's two most important parameters, port and HELO.

Port is a number from 1 to 65535. The official port for SMTP is 25, but you can change it to a different one. If you change it, you must let your email application know the change - set the the email application's outgoing mail server port to the same value.

The HELO command is the first thing sent by an email client to a SMTP server when conection established. Your email application sends a HELO command to eGo, and eGo also sends a HELO command to the recipient's SMTP server. Most email applications use the computer name as the HELO parameter. For example, if your computer name is "HOMEPC_1001", your email application will send "HELO HOMEPC_1001" to eGo. If you leave the HELO edit box blank, eGo will use the same HELO parameter used by the email application.

Most SMTP servers don't mind what the HELO parameter is, but some do. They refuse to accept a message if the HELO parameter can not be resolved. For this reason, it is recommended that you set it to localhost. You can also set it to a domain name which you own.

Logbook

If enabled, conversation details between the three parties (your email applicaion, eEo, and the recipient's SMTP server) are recorded. The Logbook can be of great help in tracing configuration and sending problems.

Clients

By default, eGo only allows connections from the same computer on which it is running. If you want eGo can be used from another computer, add the computer's IP to the "Client" list.
