MyShare

MyShare is an mini Web server for quick file sharing over the Internet. See screenshots: MyShare, Web browser.

MyShare is a bicycle, if a standard Web server like IIS (Microsoft Internet Information Server) is a car. No special training is required to use MyShare. After reading the rest of this artical, you will ba able to use MyShare.

Like most of our products, MyShare is a portable Windows application: You don't have to install it before you can use it. It can work without problems on portable storages such as USB disks. Just download the zip file which contains the single program file, unzip it to disk and let it run.

Manage the Server

Two things need to be decided before starting the server:

• Port: A port is a number from 1 to 65535. As we know, each computer connected to network has a IP address. If the IP address is the number of a house, then a port is the number of a room of that house. The official port number for a Web server is 80. But to avoid strangers or robots, we usually use other port numbers. Port numbers smaller than 2000 are not recommended, because most known services are using ports in this range. For example, 110/25 are for emails, and 1433 is used by MS SQL.
• Port Mapping: If a computer is behind a router, other computers on the Internet can not access it directly. This is because the router uses the real Internet IP address and then assigns an internal IP address to each computer behind it. If your computer is behind a router and you want to share files with people on the Internet, the router must be configured so that it link the port to your computer. This is called port mapping. If your router supports UPnP 1.0 and the [Map Port] checkbox is checked. MyShare will configure the router for the port mapping.

Once port number and port mapping is decided, now you can start the server by clicking the [Start] button on the toolbar. The server may fail to start if the port number is already occupied by another program. In that case, choose a different port number and try again. Also, if you have a firewall, it may alert you that MyShare is trying to be a server. You should tell the firewall not bo block MyShare, otherwise the server will fail to start.

Manage Shares

When you use MyShare for the first time, MyShare automatically creates the "Home" folder. The home folder is a virtual folder. A virtual folder is not a real disk folder. A real disk folder is a containner for files, while a virtual folder is a containner for file names. Virtual folders make it easier for you to organize files and real folers. For example, you can add files from different folders to a virtual folder without coping these files actually. You can add real folders or sub-virtual folders to a virtual folder too. This way, you can manage the shares in a similary way as you use Explorer to manages files and folders. Each share item has a checkbox. You can temporarily stop the sharing of the item by let it unchecked.

Test the Shares

Click the [URL] button on the toolbar and then select the "Open" command from the drop-down menu. This will open the selected share item with your default web browser. What you see on the Web browser will be the same as what your visitors will see.

Another command of the drop-down menu is "Copy". It copies the URL (address of the share share item) to clipboard.

Options

• Thumbnails: If the [Enable Thumbnails] checkbox is checked, image files will be listed as thumbnails. Otherwise, file names will be listed.
• Upload: If you want to allow your visitors to upload their files to your computer, first select a real folder from the MyShare tree, then check the [Allow Upload] checkbox.
• Password: If the [Password] edit box is not blank, the visitor will be asked to enter 'User name' and 'Password' before he can open the shared items. The visitor can enter any name as 'User name', but the 'Password' must be identical.
