Basically, ListenRight is a MP3 player that supports lyrics displaying. But it is more than that. Smooth Repeat & Pause, Fast and accurate PositioningThese are necessary features for listening foreign languages. But most ordinary MP3 players do not support them or do not support them well - you can not accurately locate a playing position or you hear static-like noise when you drag its slider quickly. ListenRight has its own special MP3 decoder and can smoothly repeat playing a sentence any number of times and/or pause a number of seconds between each repeat. It also has 3 different ways for you to locate a sentence:
Dictation ExerciseMore often than not, we think we have heard clearly and understood what is being played, but a dictation test always tells us it is not ture. Dictation exercises is not only a way to test if we really heard clearly what is being said, but a best way to enhance aural comprehension ability in the shortest time possible. In dictation mode, ListenRight repeatedly playing the same sentence until your input is identical to the original text. Then it automatically continues with the next sentence. If you type something incorrect, LightRight will not accept it, so that you know where is wrong if not what is correct. Press F1, if you need help, and the caret is just where you can not continue. See illustration. Portable ProgramListenRight is a portable program - no setup is required - just download, unzip and run. You can even use ListenRight on a flash disc or CD/DVD. Enforced Unicode SupportListenRight is a unicode program, and it stores and displays text in unicode encoding. See screenshot. |
MP3 & Lyrics: The MP3 and the lyrics file must have the same file name and must be in the same folder. Since the time tags in most lyrics files are not as accurate as required by ListenRight, Repeat, Pause and Dictation are disabled unless a tag like this is found in the lfc file:
[lr:compatible]
ListenRight Document: While supporting MP3/LRC, ListenRight also has its own file format. The extension file name of the ListenRight Document is LR. The ListenRight Document has both audio and text in one file. A special program called LRM is used to create ListenRight documents. See blow for details.

LRM |

LRM is the program that creates files used by ListenRight. See screenshot. It takes MP3 and text as inputs, and the output can be in ListenRight's private format or MP3 Lyrics format.
LRM is easy to use. If the user is familier with the language contained in the audio, he can use less time to process audio and text than playing the whole audio, because what he need to do is just to set the start and end playing position for each text line, and the middle part can be skipped.
This tutorial shows how to process a MP3 and text file and make a ListenRight file or lyrics file. First, download this zip file. The zip file contains what we need for this tutorial: a MP3 file (sr.mp3) and a file (sr.txt).
| 1. Create a LRM Document | Click the [New] button. This brings out the "New Project" dialogbox. With the "New Project" dialogbox, open what you have downloaded: "sr.mp3" and "sr.txt". Enter some texts for the "Title" and "Book Name" fields. They will be displayed on the caption bar of ListenRight, and will become "ti" and "al" tags when writing lyrics. See illustration. After you close the "New Project" dialogbox by clicking its [OK] button, the main window of LRM looks like this. Don't click the ruler - we will talk about it a little bit later. |
|
| 2. Bind Text to Audio | Select the first text line and click the [Play] button on the toolbar to start the audio. Press [Return] as soon as the last word of the text line is heard. The [Return] key will make the next text line selected as the current line. Continue in the same way for the rest text lines, until the last text line is done. |
|
| 3. Save LRM Document | Click the [Save] button on the toolbar and save the current LRM document. After a LRM document is saved, its source files (sr.mp3 and sr.txt) are no longer needed. The LRM document's file extension name is '.lrm'. |
|
| 4. Output |
Click the [Output] button to generate output.
The output format can be 1) ListenRight format; 2) Lyrics and MP3 format; 3) LRM format.
The output contents can be the complete document or some parts of the document.
Output is possible only all text lines have been processed. You can find which text lines have not been processed yet from text line list. |
The audio ruler is for selecting a audio section. Use the left mouse button to set the starting point of the selection and the right mouse button to set the ending point.
When a text line has wrong words or a text line is too long, you use the Text Line Editor to fix the problem. To do so, first select the text line from the list, and then click the [Edit] button on the toolbar. On the [Text Line] dialog box, correct the wrong words or break the line by pressing [Return] and then click [OK].
After a text line is broken into two or more lines, its associated audio is lost. You must re-associate the new text lines with proper audio sections.
You don't have to have a text file when you start a new LRM document. You can leave the "Text File" field on the "New Project" dialog box empty. After returning to the main window, click the [Insert] button and paste your text to the text editor, break the text to proper lines and click [OK].
