GSR - File Transfer for Windows Devices

GSR is for transferring files between Windows devices - computers, mobile phones. It works in a similar way to the email system, but unlike the email system, GSR does not need a server in between - the "messages" go directly from the sender to the receiver.

One of the typical situations of using GSR is as illustrated on the right. A mobile phone and a computer are connected by USB (ActiveSync) or a wireless router, and while you are working on the computer, you can send files, clipboard texts and pictures, screenshot pictures to the phone.

It is also possible to transfer files over the Internet with GSR. Read more about connections.

GSR consists of three stand-alone programs:

  • GS: File sender for Windows XP and higher. It can work alone or work as [Send to] for Explorer. It can send files, folders, clipboard texts and pictures, screenshot pictures.
  • GR: File receiver for Windows XP and higher. It manages packages received from GS in a similar way as e-mail applications manage messages.
  • SmartGSR: GS+GR for Windows Mobile 5.0 (ARMV4I) and higher.

Setup
As said, GS is a stand-alone program. You can copy GS.exe to anywhere, including a USB disk, and run it from there. But if you want to use GS as [Send to] for Explorer, you may need to put GS.exe in a permanent folder, otherwise Explorer may complain.
How GS Works

In order to send files to a GR, GS must know the GR's address (IP) and ID. If both GS and GR are connected to the same router, GS can automatically find GR's address. If they are not connected to the same router, for example, GR is in a different city, you have to type the GR's IP address manually.

Each GR has a unique ID, usually it is your email addres. It is built-in and can not be changed. GS use GR's ID to encode the sendings and GR uses its own ID to decode the recevings. If the ID is not correct, the decoding will fail and GR will disconnect GS without notice.

How to Send Non-File Data

GS can send non-file data to GR - clipboard texts, clipboard pictures, screenshot pictures.

For sending clipboard texts or picture, click GS's [Add] button and then select a clipboard command from the menu. GS lets you view and edit the texts or picture before send.

Sending a screenshot picture is a little different. When GS is working, it put an icon in the System Tray (usually at the bottom right corner of the screen). When you want to capture a screenshot and sent the picure, you click that icon. See illustration. GS's Picture Editor will pop out with a whole picture of the screen. You can then send it all or part of it.

GR

  - The Recever

Like GS, GR is standard-alone too, and you can put GR.exe anywhere you wish. The difference is GR needs a place to store the data received from GS. The default place is a sub-folder in "Application Data". "Application Data" is a system defined folder. But you can change it whenever you want.

If you run GS from a removable disk, it always use a sub-folder on the removable disk for storing received data. This make things convinient when you are using a borrowed computer.

When you first run GR, your firewall program may alert you like this. You should click [Unlock], otherwise GR will not be able to work properly.
